Did you know that your energy is effecting your dog everyday? Yes, your dog is stressed and anxious when you are in a negative mindset. Remember dogs are energy machines. They gravitate towards positive and avoid negative. This is hard when the owner is negative. So think about leaving your negative thoughts of the day, at the front door, before you come in to the house. It will be good for you and your dog.
Some dogs have a habit of snatching food or treats out of your hands. They try to get the toy before you pick it up and the dogs teeth make contact with your hand. They have no impulse control and have to have the item/food now. Below is one of the best videos to teach your dog how to have impulse control on a regular basis.
How many times have you said No to your dog? Do you think that your dog should know by now that if you keep saying No then it will give you a different behavior? It does not work that way. What could some of the reasons why you keep repeating the work No,
You have not trained your dog and you expect him to know what you want by reading your mind.
You do not give your dog enough physical and mental stimulation.
You are not feeding him the correct food.
You have many people in the family, all giving their own versions of training.
You keep rewarding him with the word NO as each time you say the word, it is acknowledging that behavior.
So take a look at the next time you say NO, WHY.
Last Saturday I volunteered for the local shelter at a Christmas event for families. We had 4 dogs there, Bluebell was the dog I was taking care for.
The families started to arrive, they would go inside and see Santa and then come outside to decorate cookies. Suddenly the children would see the dogs and do what children do, run as fast as possible, screaming. Yes straight for the dogs.
The parents not even aware of what their children were doing, did not realise that there could have been a dog bite to their child if we were not vigilant and walked the dogs away.
As parents, we are responsible in teaching our children how to act around dogs.
Very often I do not see a team between owner and dog. One of the best exercises for closing the gap on creating a team relationship, is the look exercise.
If you take a treat, show it to the dog and bring under one of your eyes and say Look, as soon as the dog looks in your eyes, praise and treat. You must have no distractions, so it is easier for the dog. Once your dog has mastered in the house, then take to the backyard. Now if you have a dog who gets distracted when you are walking, before the dog reacts to anything, say Look, as soon as the dog looks at you, praise and treat. Eventually you can phase out the treats and just say the word look.
Dog Owners get so frustrated when their dog does not always listen to them and carry out the command. We as the owners need to look at why. It could be any of the following reasons;
You have not been consisitent in your training
Too many people living in the house with their own versions of training the dog
The tone of your voice is so different that the dog does not hear the command as before
Your dog is very excited playing and cannot hear you
You are in a very distracted place and the dog is dealing with all that is around him
We as owners are so responsible in making sure that we do not put our dogs in a situation to fail. So next time. Take a breath and look at the situration before thinking your dog does not respect you
